I am a teacher and practitioner. My practice is much like that of a pianist who plays his instrument each day. In place of the piano are the drawings.
The possibility of pursuing architecture in this manner is part of a long-standing tradition within our profession.
Theoretical projects and drawing studies exist all through time and place. Villard De Honnecourt, Leonardo Da Vinci, Boulee, Durand, Garnier, Le Corbusier, Tatlin, Leonidov, ST.Elia, Superstudio, Soleri, etc., and my teachers John Hejduk and Robert Slutzky gave us all this ongoing possibility.
Architectural research outside of and within university settings continues to impact on daily commercial practice - for better or worse.
Eight Projects 1995 - 2002
My work is based on an understanding of architeture as a specific and also distinct plastic discipline.
Each project is a part of a continuing effort to locate an essential seminal or fundamental aspect of the physical content of archtitecture.
Each project is a clear, explicit, identifiable and particular architectural construct. Projects touch on, in deliberate and perceptible ways, underliying constants and requisites of architecture. The formation of habitable space. The organization of structure and material. The simultaneous nature of two dimensionality and three dimensionality, etc.
The reptetition of the most primary program (the House & Garden) and a primary spatial condition (the Insdie & the Outside) and primary site (the Ground & the Sky) are addressed not as mundane restrictions but as source and reference for spatial invention.
The drawings intend to create a physical presence and to transmit both thought (the Mind ) and sensation (the Body).
